Introduction
Traveling Overseas

Dear visitor,

Thank you for opening the ESL story page.  What you will find here is a collection of stories, essays and paragraphs that were sent in from around the world.  Though there were slight changes made for better readability, I had no intention to correct spelling or grammar, neither will have I in the future.  Perhaps we could use volunteers for the task when the messages start to pour in. :-)

There aren't many stories included (yet) because not very many people would take the time and effort to send in their essays or paragraphs.  I hope that you are not one of those who would only sit and wait for others to contribute. We need your active participation.  Without that this Web site can't serve ESL students and teachers around the world -- including yourself.

Please send in your essay(s) to:

Webmaster

Many thanks in advance.

Ervin

Traveling Overseas

Subject: Greetings from Victoria

Why am I so attracted to air travel? A couple of hundred years ago for human-kind it was only a dream to fly over the Atlantic Ocean. Nowadays it is a reality and it has a great romantic appeal to study the Earth beneath and the elevated landscapes from an airplane. One year ago I had the opportunity to travel overseas on an airplane. Everyone can enjoy traveling overseas which is still a great adventure rather than a routine activity for most people.

It is a wonderful change to see the country side from above and to have time to take delight in the sight of the panorama.

For a few minutes after take-off from Budapest, the engine worked with full power and I had heard the captains greetings. It was really reassuring. The aircraft began to shake and there was the control tower to be seen which was like a totem pole. At that moment I was not worried because I realized that the conditions were perfect.

As I looked down from about 1000 feet, I never thought that the panorama view from above could be so delightful. It was easy to see the roads, the buildings and the shape of the airport. There were no clouds ahead of us and below the river Danube looked like an enormous snake. The landscape looked like a picture from a book of fairy tales. About five minutes later we reached the clouds and I hardly was able to believe my eyes because over the white clouds the sky was as blue as a real lake. Then, I looked around the passenger's cabin and the food smelt fresh and tasted delicious. When I touched the window it was cold.

Two hours after leaving Budapest we landed at the airport at Frankfurt. That airport was more modern and that was the reason I liked to be there.

It is exiting to fly over the Atlantic Ocean and land on another continent. The second jet carried more than 400 passengers and it looked like a big metal bird. It appeared to be dignified when I cast a quick glance at it. After the take-off we saw England sliding away gently underneath. Some spots of the island were green, some blue and others looked like sparkling diamonds.

A little bit later, I noticed the Atlantic Ocean and it appeared as a dark blue endless sea. It was a fantastic sight to see because where the water was deeper , its colors became darker. Suddenly a strong wind hit the jet and the cabin rocked. However, the panorama of the ocean was very nice; perhaps that was the reason that I forget to worry about the airplane.

When we arrived over Canada I looked down again and the Rocky Mountains appeared with valleys of green forests and snowy peaks. Another airplane flew near to us and it seemed like a floating cigar. During this time I also enjoyed seeing the glittering snow and ice. The sun was shining brightly in the sky like a red hot iron ball. We flew through the blue skies, over white snow fields and through the wonderful rocky peaks. I felt very happy.

Later on, we were descending from among the clouds and landed at Vancouver's beautiful airport. Although, I loved flying more than anything, I emotionally felt happy to be on the ground again. Anyway, I never thought that Nature could present such a delightful sight from above.

After the landing in British Columbia it was great to realize that I arrived on another continent and I really appreciated this great journey. So, I felt that I was on another planet because everything was different from Europe. I enjoyed the wonderful scenery and the huge modern buildings and the fresh air everywhere. On the streets there were thousands of little lamps and the people were very friendly there.  I realized that the sight of the city was vibrant like the Niagara Falls and I will never forget this epic journey.

It was worth the airfare for me to fly between continents by airplane because I experienced new things during this journey. It was a good feeling to arrive in another continent and discover the differences. These days people can travel overseas easily which is really great. People can experience a lot of unforgettable, pleasant things and have sweet memories. So, I recommend  everyone to try to travel overseas by plain. They will appreciate its benefits and the great feeling of being over the ocean, mountains and metropolitan areas.

That is all for now! I hope you also have a great day.

Best regards,
Sanyi/ VE7VSQ
