Classification Essay
introduction
Classification is a strategy that places an object (or person) within a group of similar objects or persons and then focuses on the characteristics distinguishing it from the others in the group.
To classify then means to divide something of a larger category into different smaller categories. If, for instance, we were to classify IBM (compatible) home computers, we could not avoid talking generally about other types of computers used at homes. We would divide them to smaller units and would focus on personal computers until we arrive to the various types of IBM (compatible) computers. Even in this last group there are many types that must be considered depending on our purpose.
You will read essays in other sections that compare and/or contrast different categories. Classification is different from merely comparing and/or contrasting various categories. Just think of a library that classifies books. Of course the books are compared -- their similarities are observed -- when we place them on the shelves, but we care very little about how the books within a category treat that particular category.
When you write a classification essay, you must keep in mind your purpose. Why do you want to classify IBM (compatible) home computers? Do you want to help others make the right decision when purchasing their computer? Do you want to show their usefulness? Are you interested in their price, efficiency, or something else?
Read carefully the selections on these pages and observe how the authors classified the different categories. Answer the questions:
Do the essays focus on the characteristics that distinguish the category they classify?
Did the authors choose the right group for their classifications?
Did they include enough details?
Did they eliminate all unnecessary details?
What was their purpose?
Are the essays effective?
Then write a classification essay yourself. Remember, you may need to revise the essay a couple of times before the final piece is ready.
